10 Essential Things Everyone Forgets to Bring to the Beach

Beach vacations are among the most loved of all, and I’d say they have been for decades.

According to different surveys, more than 70% of Americans enjoy beach vacations, especially families with children.

Despite their popularity, there are still some mistakes that many travelers make, especially when it comes to packing.

In this article, we will see 10 items that people often forget, but once you bring them, you’ll never want to go to the beach without them again!

1. Ziplock Bags or Waterproof Pouches

The first very essential thing is a ziplock bag, even better if combined with a waterproof pouch.

Let’s be clear: the beach is all fun and games until your phone gets wet or your snacks get covered in sand.

A ziplock bag and a waterproof pouch can protect your electronics, cash, food, keys, or any other item from unexpected splashes or an accidental fall into the ocean.

2. Baby Powder

From what I’ve noticed talking to friends, very few people know this trick. Baby powder is perfect to clean your feet after a day at the beach

It basically absorbs moisture and makes it easy to brush the sand off effortlessly.

Just sprinkle some baby powder (not too much) on your skin and rub it gently; the sand will start falling away like magic.

Don’t forget it, especially if you’re getting back into the car or heading to lunch.

3. Extra Plastic Bags

One thing I always bring and think everyone should have is a plastic bag. You’ll always find a reason to use one at the beach. Whether it’s for wet swimsuits, throwing away trash, or keeping sandy flip-flops separate from everything else.

Some time ago, I read a comment from a woman who said she always brought a plastic bag because she liked collecting seashells and sand to take home as souvenirs.

Be careful if you do this. On some beaches (e.g., in Italy), it’s forbidden by law to take away sand, shells, pebbles, stones, seaweed, or other materials belonging to the maritime domain.

4. A Portable Phone Charger

If you plan to spend the whole day at the beach, it’s always a good idea to bring an external battery to charge your cell phone.

To see the screen properly in sunlight, the brightness will need to be at maximum, and between taking photos and using GPS, your phone’s battery won’t last long.

Another good idea could be a solar-powered charger. I’ve never tried it myself, but I know it works, and what better place with plenty of sun than the beach?

5. A Small First Aid Kit

The beach seems harmless, but minor accidents can happen, such as cuts from shells, scrapes from rocks, jellyfish stings, or blisters from walking on hot sand.

Especially if you have kids, remember to bring a small and compact first aid kit with bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and tweezers.

6. A Hat with a Chin Strap

Hats with chin strap

I always say this during my travels, but many people just don’t seem to listen.

If you’re going to the beach, especially a windy one, always opt for a hat with a chin strap.

Many people think they’re stylish, rocking their sun hats… until a strong gust of wind sends them flying across the sand.

A hat with an adjustable chin strap stays in place, giving you both shade and peace of mind. It will be very useful, especially if you visit one of the top 10 beaches of 2025 since there are some quite windy ones.

7. A Spray Bottle with Fresh Water

Sometimes, while you’re at the beach, you need a quick rinse before getting into the car, eating a snack, or wiping down sandy hands.

You could bring a small water bottle for that, or better, a small spray bottle filled with fresh water. I prefer the latter because you can also use it to cool you down when the sun gets too intense.

8. Lip Balm with SPF

Never go to the beach without sunscreen; everyone knows that.

However, many people forget to protect their lips, one of the most delicate parts of our face.

Sunburned lips are a nightmare; they get painful, really dry, and start to peel. For this reason, always remember to bring lip balm with at least SPF 30 for all-day protection.

9. A Lightweight Blanket

In this case, it depends on your personal preference. For many people, beach towels are great, but they’re small, and often, sand sticks to them.

As an alternative, some expert beach lovers prefer lightweight beach blankets, which give you more space to relax, stay sand-free, and are perfect for picnics or large groups.

Just remember to look for a sand-proof, quick-dry blanket that folds down small for easy carrying. In addition, remember to have a look at the 8 packing hacks that will save you tons of space.

10. A Bottle Opener

One last thing that many people forget is a bottle opener. Some travelers like to bring a bottle of their favorite drink to the beach, but only after realizing they have nothing to open it.

A sturdy key can work as an emergency bottle opener, but you still risk damaging it. A few years ago, I bought a stainless steel bottle with a cap that doubles as a bottle opener. I love it (you can see it in the picture above).
